Why Safeguarding Training Is Essential in Care

Effective safeguarding is fundamental to delivering safe, compassionate and person-centred care. Everyone working in health and social care has a responsibility to recognise potential abuse or neglect and take appropriate action when concerns arise.

Under Regulation 13 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014, registered care providers must protect service users from abuse and improper treatment.

Safeguarding Adults Level 1 & 2 training helps care staff understand how to:

  • Recognise safeguarding risks and identify potential signs of abuse or neglect
  • Respond appropriately when an individual raises a safeguarding concern
  • Report and escalate concerns through the correct safeguarding procedures
  • Maintain accurate records of safeguarding incidents and disclosures
  • Promote dignity, respect and wellbeing for people receiving care
  • Support a positive safeguarding culture where concerns are taken seriously

For care home managers and employers, appropriate safeguarding training forms an important part of staff development, risk management and preparation for CQC inspections.

By strengthening safeguarding awareness across care teams, organisations can help protect vulnerable adults and support safer, more accountable care environments.

Safeguarding Adults Training – Frequently Asked Questions

What is safeguarding adults training?

Safeguarding adults training teaches care staff how to recognise, prevent and respond to abuse, neglect or exploitation affecting vulnerable adults. The training helps professionals understand their responsibilities when working with individuals who may be at risk and how to take appropriate action to protect them.

Who needs safeguarding adults training?

Safeguarding training is essential for anyone working with vulnerable adults in regulated care environments, including:

  • Care assistants
  • Support workers
  • Senior carers
  • Care home managers
  • Healthcare assistants
  • Domiciliary care staff
  • Supported living staff

Many organisations require staff to complete safeguarding training as part of mandatory professional development.

What is the difference between Safeguarding Level 1 and Level 2?

Safeguarding Level 1 provides foundational awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and recognising abuse.

Safeguarding Level 2 builds on this knowledge and focuses on:

  • responding to safeguarding concerns
  • reporting procedures
  • escalation processes
  • understanding safeguarding investigations

This course combines both levels into one comprehensive programme.

Is safeguarding adults training required by the CQC?

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) expects registered care providers to ensure staff have the appropriate knowledge, skills and training to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns.

Under Regulation 13 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014, registered providers must protect service users from abuse and improper treatment.

Safeguarding Adults Level 1 & 2 training can help staff develop the knowledge needed to support these responsibilities. However, employers must ensure that training is appropriate to each employee’s role and is supported by effective safeguarding policies, procedures and supervision.

What types of abuse are covered in safeguarding training?

Safeguarding training covers many forms of abuse and neglect, including:

  • Physical abuse
  • self-neglect
  • Emotional or psychological abuse
  • Financial abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Neglect and acts of omission
  • Discriminatory abuse
  • Organisational abuse
  • Domestic abuse
  • Modern slavery

Understanding these categories helps care staff recognise warning signs and take appropriate action.

What is a Section 42 safeguarding enquiry?

Under Section 42 of the Care Act 2014, a local authority in England must make, or arrange for others to make, safeguarding enquiries when it has reasonable cause to suspect that an adult:

  • Has needs for care and support, whether or not those needs are being met by the local authority
  • Is experiencing, or is at risk of, abuse or neglect
  • Is unable to protect themselves from that abuse or neglect because of their care and support needs

The purpose of an enquiry is to determine whether action is needed to protect the adult and, if so, what action should be taken and by whom.

A Section 42 enquiry does not necessarily involve a formal investigation.

How long does safeguarding training take?

Most safeguarding awareness training courses take between 60 and 120 minutes to complete, depending on the depth of content.

This course combines both Level 1 and Level 2 safeguarding knowledge into a structured programme designed to provide practical understanding without unnecessary complexity.

Do I receive a certificate after completing the course?

Yes. Learners who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion confirming their safeguarding training and professional development.

Certificates can be used as evidence of training for employers and regulatory inspections.

Can this safeguarding course be used for care home staff training?

Yes. This course has been designed specifically for professionals working in:

  • care homes
  • domiciliary care
  • supported living services
  • healthcare environments

The training supports staff understanding of safeguarding responsibilities within real care settings.
